How to Write a Literature Review That Impresses Your Supervisor

The literature review is where supervisors judge whether you can think critically, and it is also where students most often go wrong. A weak review lists what each author said; a strong review builds an argument out of what the field collectively knows and does not know.

Search systematically

Start with a focused search using clear keywords in databases relevant to your field. Track what you find, note the key papers everyone cites, and follow their references backward and citations forward. Keep a record so you can describe your search if asked.

Read for arguments, not just findings

As you read, capture each paper's central claim, method, and limitation, not only its result. This is what lets you compare studies later and identify where they agree, disagree, or leave questions open.

Organise by theme

The single biggest improvement you can make is to organise around themes rather than authors. Each paragraph should make an analytical point and use several sources to support it, rather than walking through one study at a time.

Be critical, not negative

Critical thinking means evaluating the strength of evidence, not dismissing work. Note methodological limitations, sample sizes, or conflicting results, and explain what they mean for your understanding of the topic.
